Enter to Learn. Go Forth to Serve: My Journey from BYU-Hawaii to Ph.D.

Embarking on an educational journey is a profound experience, one that shapes not only our careers but also our character and purpose. My journey, inspired by the motto of my undergraduate alma mater, BYU-Hawaii, "Enter to Learn. Go Forth to Serve," has been transformative. This guiding principle has not only fueled my academic pursuits but also instilled in me a deep sense of service, or Tautua, which has been instrumental in my success.

Enter to Learn

I remember stepping onto the beautiful campus of BYU-Hawaii for the first time, filled with excitement and anticipation. The lush landscapes and diverse student body were just the backdrop for what would become an enriching academic adventure. The motto, "Enter to Learn," resonated deeply with me from the outset. It signified a commitment to acquiring knowledge, not just for personal gain, but to be well-prepared for the responsibilities that lay ahead.

My undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D years were marked by rigorous coursework, inspiring professors, and a supportive community. Each class and every lecture was a step towards broadening my understanding and honing my skills. But learning at BYU-Hawaii, BYU, and the University of Nebraska (UNL) was not confined to the classroom. The institutions emphasized holistic development, encouraging us to engage in extracurricular activities, community service, and leadership roles.

Go Forth to Serve

As I approached graduation, the second part of the motto, "Go Forth to Serve," became increasingly significant. It was a call to action, a reminder that the education I received was a tool to make a positive impact on the world. This philosophy aligns perfectly with the Samoan concept of Tautua, which means service. Service is not just an act but a way of life, a continuous effort to uplift and empower those around us.

After earning my undergraduate degree, I felt a strong desire to continue my education and further develop my capacity to serve. This led me to pursue a Ph.D., a journey that was both challenging and rewarding. Graduate school was a test of perseverance, critical thinking, and resilience. But it was also an opportunity to deepen my understanding of my field and explore innovative ways to address societal issues.

The Role of Tautua in My Journey

Throughout my academic journey, Tautua has been my guiding star. The principles of service and community were deeply ingrained in me, shaping my approach to learning and leadership. In graduate school, I sought out opportunities to mentor undergraduates, volunteer in community projects, and contribute to research that had practical, positive implications for underserved communities.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been seeing the direct impact of my work. Whether through teaching, community engagement, or research, I have witnessed how service can transform lives. This has reinforced my belief that education and service are inextricably linked; one enriches the other.

Bringing It Back to Tautua Foundation

Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am profoundly grateful for the lessons learned and the opportunities to serve. The Tautua Foundation embodies the principles that have guided me—bridging educational gaps, promoting leadership through service, and empowering students from underserved communities.

Through the Tautua Foundation, we strive to provide transformational educational programs, events, and partnerships that equip students with the cultural capital they need to succeed. Our mission is a testament to the enduring power of "Enter to Learn. Go Forth to Serve." By fostering a culture of service, we help students not only achieve academic success but also become leaders who uplift their communities.

Conclusion

My educational journey from BYU-Hawaii to earning a Ph.D. has been a testament to the power of service-oriented education. The motto "Enter to Learn. Go Forth to Serve" has been more than just words; it has been a guiding principle that has shaped my academic and professional life. As I continue to contribute to the Tautua Foundation, I am committed to empowering the next generation of students to learn, serve, and lead. Together, we can create a brighter future through the power of education and service.
